A MEISSEN GOLD-MOUNTED CIRCULAR SNUFF-BOX CIRCA 1750, THE MOUNTS CONTEMPORARY The exterior moulded and decorated in purple and gilt with an Oriental fretwork pattern, the cover interior finely stippled, perhaps by Johann Jacob Wagner, with Andromeda scantily clad and chained to a cliff on the right, a sea monster emerging from waves on the left, Perseus in flight above in winged sandals and holding a shield with Medusa's head and a spear, poised to rescue her (exterior with minute areas of wear) 3 1/8 in. (8.1 cm.) diam. The factory records make frequent mention of Wagner's skill as a miniaturmahler, and in particular of his role as a painter of lids for snuff-boxes
